In Their Own Words

When we began this ministry, we hoped that we that we would be able to provide shelter, sustenance and love to those who needed it.  We hoped that we could let the light and love of Jesus Christ shine through us and that He would work through us to truly touch lives and make a difference.

We found out that Jesus really did use us to do His work.  His guiding hand was there every step of the way, providing resources, volunteers and discernment.  All we had to do was listen and obey.

Being human, we became curious.  We wanted to know what effect He was having on His children that He was serving.  In April, 2008, we asked some of the guys to put down, in their own words:  What G.I.F.T.S. means to them.  Here are some of the responses.  The spelling in the responses has been left unaltered.

  • That pople care for the ones that are out side in the cold nights.  I thanks all the ones you helped us all the times we didn’t kown what to do or where to go for the love and help.  Thank you all and God look over all of us.

  • The shelter has meant a great deal to me.  Knowing that I had a warm place to sleep and food in my stomach at night.  The people staffing the shelters have shown me more than once that there are people out here that sincerely care.  They’ve given me some hope.  I’ve also met some good people.  I blew a tire on my bicycle and when I got back that night, people offered to help w/ a new inner-tube.  They didn’t have to but they did.  Thanx

  • Being homeless in Janesville was a first for me.  I have met some very nice and graceful people who don’t think twice about helping me out.  I am a very nervous person and didn’t know what to expect.  My prayers are with you people and thank you from my heart.  God bless you.

  • It gives me a place to stay while I look for work.  It also gives me more time to get to know the Lord better.  It helps me to know that there are people out there that cares for us.

  • This is a place to live, nourish and re-establish a man’s life.  Personally, I now work, worship God and relish in the glory & love of Jesus.  Thank you to the volunteers, Pastors, Fathers & other people involved in the resurrection of my life!  Love.

  • I’ve witness the world’s burdens in all walks of life.  I never thought personally in my life time that I would ever end up homeless or even living in a shelter.  I’ve struggle with hardship, pain and the devil.  And at one time or another I’ve given up on life and faith itself.  In this bad time’s of my life I’ve been bless and given a second chance.  The people in all of the shelter have been so kind to me and they’ve given me hope thru prayer.  I personally owe them much more than I can ever repay.  To all concerned I thank you from the bottom of my heart.  I thank you for your time and consideration and may God bless you and your family.

  • GIFTS has a wonderful staff and volunteers that cares alot for us single homeless men.  I have met alot of people through out the times especially when I injured my back when it was so cold outside.  My thanks to all of you and the churches who had the courage to put us up during the cold winter months.  Each one of you has the Heart of the Lord.  That means alot to me and my fellow guests.  Again my thanks to all of staff and volunteers.

If any man speak,
let him speak as the oracles of God;
if any man minister,
let him do it as of the ability which God giveth:
that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ,
to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever.  Amen.
Beloved, think it not strange
concerning the fiery trial which is to try you,
as though some strange thing happened unto you:
But rejoice,
inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings;
that, when His glory shall be revealed,
ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

And they'll know we are Christians by our love.....
